So what’s the difference between promoting your website and a brick and mortar store? That’s a common question asked by new internet marketers. It turns out the principles are the same but the methods are different. Let’s take a look at how.
The main object of promoting either store is to first create awareness of the stores existence. Secondly you want them to know what you offer and why it will improve their life. • Place Solo Ads in targeted ezines. Ezines are electronic newsletters that are directed to select groups. This is a very effective method.
• Google Adwords is another way to reach your potential clients. Google adwords allows you to promote your website anytime someone searches for the words or phrases you have selected.
• Another effective method is to make promotional handouts that can be passed out to those you meet. Of course this must direct people to your website.
• Place newspaper classifieds. You can put together a very cost effective campaign using weekly papers that are less costly and can reach your target market.
• Write and publish articles just like this one that show your expertise and direct clients back to your website.
• Start your own blog. Your own blog allows you to ad more pages of content that refers potential clients back and forth from your website to the blog and vise versa.
• Write, have written for you or find an eBook you can brand. The eBook should refer and link to your website throughout the book. This not only shows you to be an authority but also where they can learn more. Advertise your FREE eBook and give it away.

3 Way Linking – The New Link Popularity Building Strategy
3 Way Links
There has been a lot of talk over the past few months, even more so with the latest Google update, about the value of linking. What types of links are better, which types are still seen as value added to a website. Well if the truth be told, the only people who can tell us are not saying anything. I am speaking of the engineers at Google and the other search engines, the very people who are the one who determine the value of all linking.
According to some people at the various search engine optimization companies, reciprocal links are no longer being considered when determining link popularity for a website. Just like so many of the other theories search engine optimization, outside of the engineering labs, no one really knows for certain. I have read some of the reports that have been issued on this topic and these reports are far from conclusive, offering little more than contradictory examples taken over several days of testing.
So aside from a wait and see what happens next stance what can we do? Rather than adopt a reactive position to this uncertainty I feel that it would be far better to move forward and be proactive by changing my linking strategies. As long as there is any kind of controversy regarding reciprocating links, there really isn’t much point in relying on them to help build link popularity.
Personally, I still place a value in reciprocating links as a valid means of trading traffic and will continue to utilize them however, as more and more misinformation gets spread over the Internet it will become increasingly more difficult to exchange links with quality sites. So what is a webmaster to do now that this style of linking seems to be on its way out? Simple – adapt or disappear off the search engine radar. Well Google’s radar anyway.
For my consultation clients I am going to suggest that they be extremely selective on who they link with now. Spend more time evaluating the potential linking partners. If the site measure up to their standards of web development and the theme of the linking site matches their site in some manner then, go ahead and trade links.
Before they trade links with any site they should make sure that the partner site is placing their link on a page that has some “on topic” content rather than a page that contains just random links. If possible only trade links with sites that employ some form of directory system so that all of the links contained on any given page share a similar theme. I will also be suggesting that they set up their own directory style system broken into categories and every page in each category should contain a topical block of text that ties all potential links together. Setting up their own system like this will make linking with their site more desirable.
Another strategy I will be advising my clients on is the use of 3 way links. For those of you who do not know what three way links are here is a brief, simplistic description: Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, Site C links to Site A. Pretty straight forward eh? The process is pretty straight forward but the application often is not. The only way three way links work is when all the parties involved are honest and are willing to maintain those links.
Recently I tested one of my sites and discovered that approximately 80% of the sites I traded links with were not honoring our agreement. Now I fully expected that there would be some shiftless webmasters out there who would be less than trustworthy but, I never expected the number to be so high.
Although reciprocating linking isn’t too difficult of a task it does require a certain amount of time and effort. To have some unscrupulous webmaster cheat you out of your back link in your reciprocated deal is bad enough but to have one do that to your site in a 3 way link deal is even worse.
You see a 3 way linking deal requires slightly more effort due to the necessity of documenting all of the information regarding this agreement. If you are going to go through all of that effort to set up a three way linking agreement you certainly do not want one of the partners to sour the deal by dropping one of the links without notifying any of the other partners.
The extra work required to establish a successful 3 way linking agreement isn’t too difficult, it is all about record keeping. After you have researched the two sites that you think would make good candidates for your three way link swap, you are going to need to contact them and invite them into the exchange. More than likely you are going to have to lay out the plan and explain to them why a 3 way link deal is good and make sure that they understand that the only way it works is if everybody involved is open, honest and up front about everything.
As part of the research for the 3 way trade you are going to want to make sure that all three sites are in some way related. Not necessarily in direct competition with each other but connected in some way; much like the way a restaurant site would be similar to a hotel site and the hotel site might be similar to a pub site. Pretty simple really as a hotel can contain both a pub or a restaurant, it isn’t too much of a stretch to think that these 3 service based businesses could be related somehow.
Once you have the three sites picked that you would like to trade links with make sure you research them thoroughly. The things you want to be checking for are;
Page Rank
IP
Quality
Age of the sites
Current link popularity
Page Rank
When checking Page Rank you are looking to make sure that everybody is of a similar PR. Don’t get greedy and automatically suggest that your site should be linked from the site with the highest PR. In fact it might be a good idea to suggest that the higher PR site should link to the lowest PR site. Doing this may make the deal seem a little sweeter.
IP
It would be best if all 3 sites were on different IP addresses. Sites that are all residing on the same IP may be misconstrued as being part of a link farm strategy. Why take the chance?
Quality
This one should be a no brainer. If the site isn’t of a quality that you would recommend to your friends or family to visit why would you want to risk the credibility of your site by suggesting that other people go to it? Rule of thumb here on quality is this; if you wouldn’t bookmark the site for yourself, don’t link to it.
Age of the Sites
The age of the site is important because of the alleged age delay sandbox effect in Google’s algorithms. If the site is too new then you may have to wait for the site to mature before any weight is given to the out going links from that site. You should try to make sure that the sites you include in your 3 way linking are at least 1 year old or more. No guarantees that sites over a year are going to be mature enough but at least the odds are better.
Current Link Popularity
The reason you will want to check out the current link popularity is more about the investigation into their linking history. Do they currently trade links with sites that may be considered as being from a bad neighborhood. Do they link to gambling, porn or FFA sites? If they do and they are not part of the gambling or porn world and your site isn’t either then DO NOT link to them.
Three ways linking in this manner revisits the days when linking was more natural. This type of linking will demonstrate to the search engines that you value your linking recommendations and therefore the search engines should value them as well. If the search engines trust your site to make these recommendations then there is no way that the applied due diligence will get you in trouble with the search engines.

It’s a good question for you to ask yourself once in a while. If so, you’re probably getting a better night’s sleep than most.

Online shoppers are more sophisticated today. You should assume that your prospects will evaluate three to four competitors before deciding to purchase. You need to stand out and provide the right bait to get your prospects to stop and buy at your site, rather than move on to a competitor.. In some cases, merchants need to find a special kind of cheese that will get the mouse to click on certain shipping options or up-sells. Getting creative in what bait you use is what will increase conversion rates if you know what type of cheese will make that mouse click.
2. Create a value-added offer.
Sometimes you need to go beyond your product line to find a potential partner that could benefit from a cross promotion. Some gift items can be presented as bonus offerings that would bring a high perceived added value, such as. Phone cards with a volume discount. Such an item could even be co-branded as a special value- added thank you gift.
3. Offer free gifts that create viral marketing buzz
Think of a gift or promotional item that prospects will keep on them at all times such as inside their purse or wallet. Giving this item away is what creates the viral marketing buzz for increased “buzz”, brand awareness, and ultimately more Internet sales. Article Optimization – Directory Submission 101
It is a pleasurable challenge writing to Ezine and Article publishing Directories. This is the “sandbox” that most writers are contributing to today. More articles are written and show up as an entry to Google, Yahoo, MSN, AltaVist and other search engines than their are websites. Some websites are articles in themselves. It is much easier to write an article than it is to build a new website for most of us. The common person may not be able to do build their own website, but he or she may have the talent to be a successful writer. Think of the competition though! Thousands of writers writing about their content, promoting their website, and sharing their ideas. The numbers are overwhelming! There are a number of things that a writer needs to be aware of when submitting articles to develop a mass readership.
Article Optimization – If you want your article to show up on page number one of Google, it has to be optimized. Optimization is done by following some of the simple rules called “Search Engine Optimization”.
Choose a high quality article directory to submit to. This will contribute a great deal to getting the article close to the number one spot. You can determine the article directories PR rating in Google ·by installing the Google task bar on you browser and going to the article directory website. Contributing your article to the directory is a very simple thing. You will have to provide personal information, possibly a pen name, your website url if you have one, and the category you will be writing about.
Use keyword rich content in the title, teaser, and body of the article. You have to do some keyword research and plug them in to your article every chance that you can. A good example in this article would be the keyword “article directory“. It has to make sense when you use it. Once every paragraph or two and your readers will not get bored with the article and keep reading until the end of the article.
Use bold, italic, and underline when it seems appropriate with your keywords. Using Google, go look up some of your favorite keywords. You will notice in the list of Google links that the keywords you put in are in bold. Google picks up on the keywords. Let me repeat that, Google picks up on the keywords. In SEO Made Easy, the author indicates that not only does Google pick up on keywords, but Google picks up on keywords that are in bold, italic, and underlined.
Article Directories will let you place one to three incidents of anchor text in the body of the article. This is an excellent way to get a link back to your website! Google takes a while to do this, but eventually it will index the article and register the link. You can work in your keywords in clever fashion this way. If you have a website, and you are promoting your website in the article, this is the opportunity to use the keywords from your website. If the article directory allows the technique, html anchor text entries can be made in the body of the article as well as the bio. The reader would not normally know that html was being used. Of course the Article Dircetory has to accept html code for this to work.
Use anchor text in the article writers bio. Most Article Directories accept three, others will only allow you one. This is the sales pitch. If you have interesting content in the article, and have succeeded in convincing your reader that your contribution is worth investigating some more, they will want to go to your website and look some more! This is the author’s sincere wish most of all, to gain trust and repore with his or her readers and to start a continuing business relationship. It can be done with a proper close to the article asking for the reader to “come on in, the water is fine!”
Article Writing – If you want your article to be read from start to finish, choose keywords and content that will make sense to the reader. Don’t try to write about nuclear physics to a business crowd.
Determine your audience. This is done easily by entering your keywords into Google. Look at the number of entries returned. An article will be successful if you choose an audience that is not to large that you cannot compete against and not so small that you will only expose the article too few times to too few readers. When starting, it is a good idea to start with keywords that are getting about 30 hits a day at Overture. Normally there would also be less than ten million entries returned from the Google keyword search for your topic. Work on the larger populations when you get this down. You will find innumerable targets and keywords that you can do this with. There is no end to topics available on the internet. What a rich source of information!
Use original content when submitting to Article Directories. They have a way of finding out if your content is not original. Article directory submission guidelines always require you have exclusive license allows your name to be associated with the articles produced for you or by you. So don’t do it. You will get caught!

Are Your Subscribers Receiving Your Newsletter?
In my e-mail one day, I received the following message: “Hello, I am a subscriber to your ezine and received the attached e-mail. Please advise if this is actually from your website. Thank you.”
The attachment was from my mailing list program. It was informing my dear subscriber that since her mail kept bouncing, “I`m not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.”
1. The Problem
Why was my newsletter bouncing? My mailing list program reports receiving this message: “…The information presently available to AOL indicates this server is transmitting unsolicited e-mail to AOL. Based on AOL`s Unsolicited Bulk E-mail policy at http://www.aol.com/info/bulkemail.html AOL cannot accept further e-mail transactions from this server. Please have your ISP/ASP or server admin call AOL at 1-888-212-5537, or visit http://postmaster.info.aol.com for more information.”
Basically, I was being accused of sending unsolicited commercial e-mail. This was a double opt-in subscriber. I don`t do spam!
America Online, Inc. (AOL) had blocked my subscriber from receiving the e-zine she requested. About fifteen percent of my subscribers use an AOL e-mail address. Not only am I adversely affected, but my AOL subscribers are not getting their e-mails.
In contacting AOL sales and technical support, I found myself against a brick wall. Although, I was repeatedly offered a free trial to their service, they were unable to help me regain my subscriber.
“Why don`t you contact your subscriber and have them whitelist your e-mail address?” How? All I have is her AOL e-mail address and everything I send to her fails. Believe me, I`ve tried. (You could use another e-mail address, I suppose, to trick AOL, but why should you have to?)
Of course, they absolutely refused to remove the block against me. (If you would like to learn more about AOL, try the search terms “AOL” and “AOL sucks” in a major search engine.)
By the way, it isn`t just AOL that is doing this. Some other major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are doing the same thing. As well, some popular e-mail software programs also filter out wanted e-mails.
2. Some Solutions
If your subscribers are not receiving your newsletter, here are some things you can do to alleviate the problem.
1. Warn your subscribers. On your newsletter signup page, explain why they might not receive your e-zine. Explain about e-mail filters; ask them to whitelist your domain, not only to bypass the ISP spam filters but also to allow mail through any e-mail software they may have.
2. Try to avoid using words that trigger spam filters. Personally, I don`t like this one; it smacks of violating my right to free speech, freedom of the press, et cetera. (Yes, I know. With rights come responsibilities. However, I am acting responsibly!) As a practical matter, though, it`s something you have to consider. (I had my newsletter checked by a popular spam checker and it passed with flying colours.)
3. Send a text e-mail informing your subscribers that the current issue of your newsletter is available online at your website. (It could also be a good move to have an archive of past issues there, too, to boost your content and search engine rankings).
4. Consider using alternative ways of communicating. For example, you might try Really Simple Syndication (RSS).
Oh, by the way, my replies (with read receipt requested) to my dear subscriber`s e-mail address appear to never have made it. To her I say: “If you`re out there somewhere, please re-subscribe. You might want to think about using a different e-mail address, though.”
